At Cancer Pathways, we believe education is the cornerstone of a healthier future. We’re committed to providing young people with the knowledge and skills they need to understand cancer and take proactive steps to reduce their cancer risk. Our signature Student Education Program, Cancer Happens®, is at the heart of this mission, empowering students across the country with crucial cancer education and risk reduction strategies.

Education and empathy

Our Program Managers collaborated with health professionals, educators, students, community organizations, and families impacted by cancer to develop the Cancer Happens curriculum. Together, we developed a comprehensive curriculum addressing the complexities of cancer education while providing age appropriate information. The program is scientific but it’s also deeply rooted in the real-world experiences of those affected by cancer.

What does Cancer Happens® offer?

We designed the Cancer Happens® curriculum to be flexible, engaging, and accessible for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. It offers standards-aligned lessons and activities that educators can seamlessly integrate into their classrooms. The curriculum covers everything from understanding the basics of cancer to learning about lifestyle choices that can reduce cancer risk, choices like wearing sunscreen, or not smoking. It also emphasizes the importance of supporting family members and friends affected by the disease. The goal is to offer not only information, but also awareness and empathy.

Our Impact

Since 2005, Cancer Happens® has reached more than 126,000 students across the country. Students tell our educators that they don’t get this vital information anywhere else. Three quarters of the students we work with say they know someone with cancer, highlighting the program’s relevance and the need for open dialogue on this difficult topic. Schools and community groups are ideal forums for discussing important health information and starting conversations that can make a lasting impact.

Our online curriculum is versatile and can be adapted to meet the needs of educators, students, and community members. Whether used in elementary, middle, or high schools, community-based organizations, or health-related agencies, our online resources are designed to make critical cancer education more accessible to everyone.
