Tobacco Cessation Group Facilitator (King County)
Description
Cancer Pathways is seeking a Tobacco Cessation Facilitator for our Quit the Nic teen tobacco cessation workshops at Seattle-area high schools. This facilitator will lead an in-person group of high school students who would like to end their dependence to nicotine products. The group will meet for 10 sessions, over 9 weeks for 50-minutes each. Prior to starting the workshop, the facilitator will be expected to complete both an online, virtual training through the American Lung Association and a brief training session with the Cancer Pathways Community Education Program Manager.
This is a contract position with a rate of $32/hour, not to exceed 4-5 hours per week – to start. All training, marketing, scheduling, and coordination with the high school will be provided by Cancer Pathways. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated, empathetic individual seeking part-time, meaningful work experience and who is passionate about helping people end their dependence to nicotine-containing products.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Present the American Lung Association’s N-O-T (Not on Tobacco) curriculum to high school students via 8-10 in-person group sessions
- Guide students through the process of quitting any nicotine product. These types of topics include addressing motivators, barriers, alternatives, stress-reduction, exercise/physical activity, behavior change techniques, etc.
- Navigate teen group dynamics and experiences with calm, non-judgemental, empathetic, and straightforward demeanor
- Distribute Quit Kit supplies and other incentives to students, when appropriate
- Coordinate with Cancer Pathways staff and/or school personnel to address group issues/scheduling/dynamics
- Keep in communication with Cancer Pathways staff to report back metrics and other information
- Data collection via student and school staff surveys
- Refer students and teachers to appropriate support resources and volunteering opportunities at Cancer Pathways
- Provide program feedback including FAQs/comments presented by students and teachers to the Program Manager
Required Qualifications:
- Prior experience communicating and engaging with teens
- Familiarity and experience with tobacco intervention and cessation skills, such as motivational interviewing
- A background in public health, social work, education, or related fields
- Strong knowledge and awareness of the latest tobacco use trends, devices, terminology, difficulty of quitting, etc.
- 1-2 days of availability, Monday-Friday, during school hours (8:00 am – 3:00 pm)
- Reliable transportation
- A business license in one’s residing city is required at time of hire
- Must pass a national background check
